Biography of Composers:


Shigenobu Nakamura

Shigenobu Nakamura was born in Osakain 1950. He studied at graduate school of Aichi Prefectural University of Art and Music. Before completing his course in 1977, he studied at National Conservatory of Music in Munich with W.Killmayer, on a DAAD sholarship between 1974 and 1976. In his young days, he has won numerous awards including the third prize in 1970 and the second prize in 1972 of composition division of the Japanese Musical Competition, the AVRO award of the International Gaudeamus Composition Competition in 1977, the composition prize by Japanese Musical Group (Nihon Ongaku Shudan) in 1978, the composition prize by the JAPAN Symphony Foundation in 1979, the Music Today Composition Award in 1983, and so on. Nakamura is a composer with a career spanning some 40 years in the field of contemporary music. He has created around 100 compositions, which include four symphonies and seven compositions for orchestra. His compositions are often performed at concerts in Japan and overseas, and much of this work is often broadcast and recorded on CD. Since the late 1980s, he has enthusiastically produced and presented Music Theater works using computers, and some of his Music Theater pieces using computers were accepted and presented at the International Computer Music Conference (ICMC) in 1992, 1995, 1996, 1997 and at ZKM(Media Art Center in Karlsruhe/Germany) in 1998. Recently he has also produced visual works, which were accepted and presented at International Award for Video Art(Germany) in 1995 and 1996, “l’immagine leggera” Palermo International Videoart Film and Media Festival (Italy) in 1997, ICMC2001 and ICMC2003. 1997 and 1998 he was artist-in-residence at the ZKM Institute for Music and Acoustics. In 1999 and 2000 he was Jury of the composition division of the Japanese Musical Competition. He is presently professor of the Department of Acoustic Design, Faculty of Design, National Kyushu University


Takeyoshi Mori

Takeyoshi Mori is a composer, programmer, and educator for electroacoustic music. He received his master’s degree in Music Technology from New York University, and his pieces have been performed at Musica Viva 2007 in Portugal, ICMC 2008 in Belfast, DengakuIII in Tokyo, NYCEMF 2009, and 101Tokyo in Iceland. He currently teaches electroacoustic music composition and sound programming courses at Tokyo University of the Arts and Senzoku Gakuen College of Music.


Tomoko Nakai

Tomoko Nakai was born in Yokohama, Japan. In 1996 she began studies in composition and computer music with Takayuki Rai and Cort Lippe at the Sonology Department, Kunitachi College of Music. In 2002 she completed a master’s degree at Kunitachi. Her works have been selected and performed at various festivals and conferences such as ICMC (2001 Cuba, 2002 Sweden and 2005 Spain), “MIX.02″ (Denmark), and Asia Music Festival 2003 in Tokyo. She was on the music jury for ICMC 2007, Denmark. She currently teaches composition and computer music as a part-time lecturer at Tokyo University of Technology, Senzoku Gakuen College of Music, and Tokyo Denki University.


Naotoshi Osaka

Naotoshi Osaka is a composer and an acoustics researcher. He received M.S. degree in electrical engineering from Waseda University in 1978. He worked at the Electric Communication Laboratories, NTT, Tokyo, Japan, from 1978 to 2003. He received a Doctor of Engineering in 1994. His main research interest is timbre synthesis for both sound and speech. Since 1990 he has focused mainly on composing computer music and related sound synthesis technologies.He joined the ICMC’93and ICMC’03. Besides composition, he has also organized computer music concerts, such as the NTT Computer Music Symposium I (’97) and II (’01).From 1996 to March 2003, he led a computer music research group at NTT Communication Science Laboratories in Atsugi, Kanagawa. He is presently a professor at Tokyo Denki University. He is a member of ASJ, IEICE, IPSJ, ICMA and IEEE. He was a former ICMA Asia/Oceania Regional Director. Last year he founded the Japanese Society for Sonic Arts.


Shota Nemoto

Shota Nemoto is a master course student of Tokyo Denki University. His research interest is timbre search from given large timbre database. He is presently learning both sound timbre search system construction under Professor Osaka and animation programming.


Sungho Hwang

황성호 (한국예술종합학교 음악원 작곡과 교수)

HWANG Sung Ho is a composer, professor, theorist, writer, critic and program supervisor of KBS-FM. He graduated from Seoul National University, then studied composition and music theory under Prof. Peter Cabus, Landeghem Jan Van at Brussel Koninklijk Conservatorium and electronic music under Prof. David Porcelijn, Ton Bruynel at Utrecht Conservatorium and Instituut voor Sonologie, Utrecht University. Now, he is a professor at Korean National University of Arts, president of KEAMS (Korean Electro-Acoustic Music Society) and also serves as music director of the new media performance series, NextWaveConcert and SICMF(Seoul International Computer Music Festival).

Having started his career as a member of the 3rd Generation and DyunlongPae (Electrong: electronic music association), he has been very active in many areas in his field. Commissioned by KBS, MBC, the National Traditional Music Institute. the National Chorus, the National Traditional Music Orchestra, Winter Universiade ‘97 Organizing Committee, the Korean Music Association, his compositions range from orchestral works, chorus works, chamber works to  traditional chamber works. After his first personal recital in 1994,  he personally gave concerts several times more by the invitation of Korean Festival Ensemble, Daegu Contemporary Music Festival. His works has been performed in PAN Music Festival, Seoul Music Festival, the Spring Music Festival in St. Petersburg, Russia. His orchestral work, Palangdo was performed at the regular concert of the Russia National Symphony Orchestra(Bolshoi Hall, Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory).

He also participated in the establishments of major groups important in the history of electro-acoustic music in Korea, including Korean Electro-Acoustic Music Society in which he had been served as a president until 1997 and held Computer Music Festival in Seoul and Computer Music Contest, KOREA. He was a music director of New Media Playgrounds, the 50th anniversary of the founding of Seoul National University. He is presently in charge of NextWaveConcert, an experimental performance. He was a member of faculty in Chugye University of Arts, Seoul National University and presently a professor of Department of Composition in Korean National University of Arts. Also he is a director of Computer Music Center, KNUA.


Seongah Shin

신성아 (계명대학교 음악공연예술대학 작곡과 교수)

Seongah Shin is a composer, sound artist, educator, and a head of biggiefried production in Seoul, South Korea. She is also the Vice President for Asia/Oceania and Asia/Oceania Regional Directors for the International Computer Music Association (ICMA). She holds a Doctoral of Musical Arts degree in Composition at the Conservatory and Master in Fine Arts degree in theatre: design and technology, emphasis in sound design from the Theatre Department from University of Missouri-Kansas City where she studies with Dr. Chen Yi, Dr. James Mobberley, Dr. Paul Rudy, and Prof. Tom Mardikes. She also holds a Master of Music degree in Computer Music Composition from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University where she studied with Dr. McGregor Boyle. She studied composition and computer music with Prof. Hwang, Sungho at the Chugye University for the Arts in Seoul, Korea

Dr. Shin has also held the residency position at the Missouri Repertory Theatre in Kansas City where she composed and designed the music of the production Morning Star in 2001-2002 season with director Risa Brainin. Her music has been performed at various conferences and festivals, including the Seoul International Computer Music Festival, Society of Composers Inc., June in Buffalo, Florida Electroacoustic Music Festival, Santa Fe International Electroacoustic Music Festival, the “literatur-schallmauer” project and various others. She also studied with Betsy Jolas, Andre Bon in Conservatoire America, and worked as a leading sound designer in the Aspen Music Festival and School in Film Scoring where she was the recipient of the Susan & Ford Schumann Scholarship. She worked as an artist residency in 2003-2004 at the iEAR studio at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, New York. She is a member of Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) and Korean Electro-Acoustic Music Society. Her audio-visual work, spring_flowing will perform in International Computer Music Conference(ICMC) 2008 in Balfest, North Island. Dr. Shin is now a full-time professor in the Department of Composition, College of Music & Performing Arts, Keimung University in Daegue, South Korea.


Seungyon-Seny Lee

이승연 (상명대학교 문화예술대학원 뮤직테크놀로지과 교수)

Seungyon-Seny Lee completed her doctorate in computer music composition from the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics at Stanford University (DMA 2002). She was a selected composer in a year-long course in composition and computer music at IRCAM in 2000-2001. Her compositions, including acoustic, electroacoustic pieces and more recently interactive audio-visual installation works, have been performed at major festivals in the world such as Internationale Musikinstitut Darmstadt, Agora Festival in Paris, Seoul International Computer Music, International Computer Music Conference, Art Action-Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin, Primavera en la Havana in Cuba, Florida Electroacoustic Music, XIII CIM l’Aquila, WestWaveDance Summer Festival in San Francisco, Centre Acanthes in Avignon, and so forth.  She has received many grants and awards such as fromKorean Culture & Arts Foundation, Acanthes, Asia Pacific Scholars Program, and honorary mention in Luigi Russolo International Computer Music Competition. As a resident artist, she has been at Cite Internationale des Arts program in France, Art OMI International Music Residency Programin NY, Djerassi Resident Artists Program in California, where she received Oshita Fellowship award and at Centre d’Art Marnay where is an international multidisciplinary art center in France where she also received UNESCO Fund. She teaches in Department of Music Technology, Graduate School of Culture and Arts at SangMyung University, and she is a director of Intermedia Performance Lab.
